PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is venous blood centrifuged so a platelet concentrate can be returned to the same person’s dermis or scalp. Alpha granules release PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, EGF and IGF-1; the aim is not volume but a controlled wound-healing cascade. PRF claims slower release from a fibrin matrix. Evidence is moderate for glow and as an adjunct in androgenetic alopecia; it does not replace ptosis, breast volume or baldness surgery. Preparation (single/double spin, leukocyte content) affects the result.

Concentrating platelets — not manufacturing miracle cells

Whole-blood platelet count varies by person. PRP is plasma separated from red cells in an anticoagulated tube, enriched to a multiple of baseline platelet density. Leukocyte-rich (L-PRP) preparations can raise inflammatory cytokine load; leukocyte-poor choices are debated on facial skin. ‘Stem cell’ marketing is wrong: PRP is not a mesenchymal stem-cell product. Growth factors stimulate angiogenesis, fibroblast migration and ECM synthesis; they do not occupy space like cross-linked HA. PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is a fibrin network made without anticoagulant; release kinetics differ, and superiority is not proven in every indication.
